Vir municipality is located on the beautiful island of Vir. The island area covers 22,38 km² and it’s connected with a bridge to the mainland next to the Privlaka town. Nearby cities are Nin (15 km) and Zadar (26 km), this makes Vir a very good connected place all year round.
Proximity to mainland and mild Mediterranean climate are the main reasons of continuing habitation on Vir dating back to 9th century BC. Back then the island was inhabited by Liburnians, one of the Illyrian tribes. The remains of Liburnian forts can be witnessed on St. George’s hill and further north in Gaj. There are also scarce iron age remains found along the Gračić-Križice-Gajine route. Apparently the Romans made sure that Vir is connected alright which can be confirmed by the remains of the road found on the mainland side, (Via Communis.) While very little remains of the Roman settlement can be found, there are plenty of other significant sights throughout Vir, such as: Venetian fort Kaštelina, St. John the Baptist Church, St. George’s little church on Bandira and many architecturally interesting smaller chapels.
Nowadays, Vir is determined to become main tourist destination. What makes this island a favorite destionation for family and nautical tourism are surrounding rugged coastline, plenty of gravel and sand beaches, many coves and anchorages, crystal clear sea and mild Mediterranean climate with almost 300 sunny days throughout the year. Numerous restaurants, taverns and night clubs will make sure that you enjoy best gourmet delicacies and have an unforgettable experience. You will also meet the folklore singing and dancing performed by artistic group “St. John’s”.
Those who prefer more active vacation can find diving center, aquapark, bicycle tracks, trekking, fishing arrangements and numerous trips to nearby places, of which the most famous is the trip to very small island of Škojić and its amazing sand beach. Rental services will take care of all your needs whether you need a bike, motorcycle, car, boat or a speedboat. The island’s position in a heart of the Adriatic is ideal for trips to nearby national parks as well, you may visit gorgeous Plitvice Lakes, Krka waterfalls, Paklenica national park and Kornati national park. Proximity of ancient Croatian cities like Nin and Zadar complete the wonderful offerings of Vir.
